In Ayurveda, it is said that digestion begins in the mouth.

We are what we eat

In Ayurveda, it is said that digestion begins in the mouth. But even before the mouth, it begins in our senses; in the moments we pause before eating to assimilate (through our perceptions and thoughts) what we are about to consume.

It’s not just about the food

If we want to heal digestion, first we must slow down and hear, smell, see, even touch our food. We must engage our senses so that we notice what is happening, and then align with it… or change it. Only then are we ready to truly taste our food, and only after tasting it and chewing it many times over are we ready to invite the food into the interior of our body. Why? Because those morsels of food are about to be transformed into the very fabric of our body, blood and bone. Because what we consume becomes what we are.

In the same way, we can approach radical transformation in our world by:

  • slowing down
  • tapping into our senses
  • noticing what is happening here in the body
  • paying attention to our thoughts, our actions, our words
  • tracking how we are moving through time and space
  • acknowledging our dreams and our visions

When we allow time to savor our experiences, we can align with them… or change them… or spit them out. We can give ourselves permission to chew many times over before agreeing to swallow anything in our experience. We do nothave to integrate everything we experience into our own being, into our cellular structure.  We get to choose. And knowing that we have a choice is the first step on this journey. Taking ownership of our experience is essential to stepping onto the Heart Path.
